We are currently looking for a few good people to help us out. Not only do we need people to help us here on the farm, but need help from people willing to help us out from the comfort of your own home, using your computer and phone.
Here is a list of some of the many things that we need. Those of you who are in driving distance can assist in a variety of chores here at the sanctuary. Just a few things we need are people to assist with "hands on" horse care. This includes but is not limited to feeding, grooming, training, handling, and just spending time with them. We also need help with farm chores, such as cleaning manure, repairing and building the barn, sheds, and fences. Trimming trees, farm cleanup, and just assisting with projects. We particularly could use someone with experience, to assist with training the horses to ride & drive, and someone to simply help keep the barn clean and fresh, and to groom the old winter coats off of the horses.
If you are too far away to actually come to the farm, or just don't feel comfortable with horses, we still could use your help. We always need people to help with fundraising, and making contacts. One of the main problems we are always struggling to make ends meet with finances, is because by the time I finish caring for the horses and taking care of other needs, there is no time or energy left to write letters and make phone calls, and on top of that, paperwork is just not "my thing". Finding someone to assist with this fundraising, who could make us some professional looking forms would be most appreciated. On another level, I am considering getting a 501c3, and checking into grants. This will require someome experienced with this sort of thing.
Those of you who are not comfortable with horses can still help on the farm. There are always plenty of building and cleaning projects, and there are cats, dogs and other small animals that need attention.
Besides working at the farm, or doing paperwork, we also would appreciate donated professional legal help, veterinary care, farrier services, and horse training.
Anyone can volunteer for us, but we require all volunteers to fill out a simple application, provide references, prove skill level (with horses), and possibly take some horse care training from myself. The reason for this is because we have had some bad experiences in the past, with volunteers who would not help, damage tack, ride horses without permission, and in one instance, even steal horses. I am not willing to deal with this sort of behavior again. Although you are volunteering your time, and I always try to make it enjoyable, it is a job. You are doing your part to help the horses, FOR the horses, not to acquire personal wealth or have us provide entertainment. Anyone working directly with the horses, other animals, or using tools will be required to sign a liabilty waiver. Our horses are generally very gentle, but even the most gentle horse, or smallest pony, can be dangerous. Neither myself, the organization, or anyone are liable if you become injured. I also retain the right to refuse anyone from doing any specific chore, touch any particular animal, volunteer in general, or entering the premises, at any time, if I assume a problem. Volunteers under the age of 16, MUST be accompanied by a parent. Volunteers between ages 16 and 18 must have a signed statement from their parents to work with animals or tools, and must be with another person age 16 or older at all times. Volunteers many not enter the farm without myself or another "lead person" present, or without prior approval.
Don't let all these rules deter you. This should be a pleasant and fun experience while offering your useful services and assistance. Once the chores are completed, you may find yourself in the saddle if I feel that you are qualified to ride. I always encourage volunteers to being a bag lunch and soft drinks, and spend some quiet time surrounded by horses. As our volunteer program grows, expect at least a few summer picnics and camp fires in the evening. Volunteering is a job, but it should be rewarding and fun too.
If you want to volunteer, send us email, and I will mail, or email you an application.
